A nineteen-year-old sailor is betrayed on his wedding day and locked in a lightless cell. He emerges fourteen years later with an education, a dead man's map, and a patient, terrible plan. The revenge takes a thousand pages; this is the journey to the means.
Edmond Dantès sails into Marseilles in February 1815, nineteen, about to be made captain and about to be married. Within days he is locked in the Château d'If, a real island fortress in the bay. He comes out fourteen years later, sewn into another man's shroud and thrown into the sea, with an education and the secret of the Spada treasure.
The treasure is on Montecristo, a real granite island in the Tuscan archipelago. This journey is the first act of the novel, from the harbour at Marseilles to the cave full of diamonds, about 318 miles across the Mediterranean. What he does with the money takes the rest of the book, and more than a thousand pages.
