Four thousand miles down
A golden afternoon by the river takes a vertical turn when a white rabbit checks its pocket watch. To follow it is to trade waking logic for the merciless rules of a dream. Alice estimates her fall at four thousand miles, a plunge straight toward the centre of the earth where time stops at six o'clock.
Alice follows the White Rabbit down its hole and falls for so long that she starts working out the distance. “I must be getting somewhere near the centre of the earth. Let me see: that would be four thousand miles down, I think.” That is the length of this route, roughly the radius of the earth, walked on a map drawn by hand past the Pool of Tears, the Duchess's house, the Mad Tea-Party and the Queen's croquet ground.
Lewis Carroll first told the story on a boat trip up the river at Oxford in July 1862 to Alice Liddell and her sisters, and published it in 1865. It is a dream with a dream's logic, and a good book to walk a chapter at a time. The text is Carroll's original, with none of the films' additions.
